Rhode Island

Rhode Island surfski paddling is centered on Narragansett Bay, where protected water, strong tidal flow, and numerous access points support year-round activity. The bay accommodates a wide range of paddling styles, from steady training and group paddles to race courses and longer tours. South of the bay, Rhode Island Sound provides open-water exposure and becomes a focus when conditions align for more committing paddles.

The surfski community in Rhode Island is active and well connected. Paddlers tend to see the same faces across training sessions, group paddles, and local events, and those overlaps form the backbone of the community. Knowledge is shared informally—about conditions, timing, routes, and safety—and new paddlers are usually folded in through time on the water rather than through formal structures.

Because of its mix of accessible water and established participation, Rhode Island supports the full spectrum of surfski activity. It’s a place to learn, to train consistently, to race locally and regionally, and to build longer-term paddling relationships. For many paddlers, it’s not just where they paddle—it’s where they find their people.
